Welcome to my Local Studies Web Page
Previously hosted by blueyonder.

My name is Susan Laflin and I maintain a number of web-pages, both for my own use and on behalf of others. Details of these may be seen on my main webpage.

In 1967 I completed an M.Phil in upper-atmosphere Physics at the Mullard Space Science Laboratory at University College, London. The thesis was entitled "Positive Ions in the Topside Ionosphere".Following this, I worked as a lecturer in Computer Science in University departments at Loughborough and Birmingham. I stayed at the University of Birmingham until my retirement in 2000.

My main interests lie in Archaelogy and History. While at Birmingham, I founded the conference on Computer Applications in Archaeology.

In family history, I am working on one-name studies of my father's family in Suffolk and of my mother's family in Shropshire and I have also traced my female line back as far as I can (1729).

I completed an MA in English Local History (awarded in 2001) and have become interested in Place-Names and other local history. My study of Ford Place-names is still proceeding.

Both my husband, Philip C. Barker, and I myself have an active interest in wargames and military history - in my case especially in the ancient period. For details of these, please see our wargaming webpages.

Since retiring, I have also spent many hours studying study medieval Latin documents, mainly relating to Shropshire, and I was a member of the Ordericus Vitalis Group until it's demise in 2014.
